You don’t need a car to enjoy central Lyon — the public transport network and walkable old town make that unnecessary for most visitors. But if your plans include the Beaujolais vineyards, the foothills of the Alps, or a wider Rhône Valley road trip, renting a car opens up the region in a way trains and buses can’t match. Do You Actually Need a Car in Lyon?

For sightseeing within the city itself, the answer is almost always no. Lyon’s TCL network of metro, tram, bus, and funicular lines covers the historic centre thoroughly, and driving in Vieux Lyon’s narrow lanes is more hassle than it’s worth. Parking in the centre is limited and expensive, and much of the old town is pedestrianised in any case. A car becomes genuinely useful only once you’re heading beyond the city limits — to wine country, the Alps, or smaller towns not well served by rail.

Where to Rent a Car in Lyon

The two main rental hubs are Lyon–Saint-Exupéry Airport and the city centre, particularly around La Part-Dieu station. Driving Rules and Practical Tips

France drives on the right, and an international driving permit is recommended (though not always mandatory) for visitors from outside the EU alongside their home licence. Motorway tolls (péage) apply on most French autoroutes, payable by card or cash at toll booths, so keep some change or a card handy for longer drives. Speed limits are strictly enforced, including via fixed and mobile radar cameras, and drink-driving limits are lower than in some countries, so plan accordingly if wine tasting is on the itinerary.

Best Day Trips by Rental Car

A car really earns its cost once you leave the city. The Beaujolais wine region begins less than an hour north of Lyon and is best explored at your own pace, stopping at small domaines that don’t always appear on organised tours. To the east, the foothills of the French Alps and towns like Annecy are within a comfortable day-trip distance, while south of the city, the Rhône Valley opens onto Provence and the Ardèche gorges for those with more time. None of these destinations are impossible by train or organised tour, but a rental car gives you the flexibility to linger in a vineyard village or detour to a viewpoint without working around a bus schedule.

Renting for the Airport Transfer Only

If you only need a car to get from Lyon–Saint-Exupéry Airport into the city and back, it’s worth comparing the cost against the Rhônexpress tram, which runs directly between the airport and Part-Dieu station in around 30 minutes. For most visitors without onward road-trip plans, the tram is simpler and avoids the need to navigate an unfamiliar city and its low-emission zone on arrival.
